The Future of WiNDC

Mitch Phillipson July 08, 2025

I am the new director of the Wisconsin National Data Consortium (WiNDC), and I am excited to share my vision for the future of WiNDC and the upcoming changes that will enhance our offerings and community engagement.

About Me

I earned a Ph.D in Mathematics from Texas A&M University in 2015 with a concentration in Enumerative Combinatorics. I then worked as an Assistant Professor of Mathematics at St. Edward’s University in Austin, Texas. In 2022, my wife and I decided to move back to Wisconsin, where we both grew up. I joined WiNDC as a Data Scientist in August 2022.

I am a strong advocate for open source software and data, and I believe in the power of collaboration to drive innovation and improve policy analysis. My goal is to make WiNDC a leading resource for economic modeling and data analysis, fostering a community of researchers and policymakers who can leverage our resources to make informed decisions.

Coming Updates

  • New Seminars
    • WiNDC Weekly - Tuesdays at 11:00 AM Central Time, starting July 8. The calendar invite is attached to this email. During the first seminar, I will share my vision for WiNDC and the direction I plan to take it. I will also discuss the upcoming changes and updates.
    • MPSGE Monthly - The date will be announced soon. This seminar will focus on MPSGE and the development of MPSGE.jl. This is a great seminar to attend if you are interested in learning more about MPSGE, how to use it, and how to contribute to its development.
    • Consortium Quarterly - Open only to consortium members, this seminar will guide the direction of WiNDC and influence the development of new data products and features.
  • Updated Website Launching next Tuesday, July 8. My goal with the new website is to preserve the existing content while making it easier to navigate and find information. It will also be easier to update and add content. For example, one feature I’m particularly excited about is the ability to add new data products and make them available via the API.
  • Data Available via API Planned for the end of July, this will allow users to access data products programmatically and by version. This is a significant step towards making our data more accessible and usable for various applications.
  • New Data Products With the introduction of the API, we will be able to offer new data products, including: Bilateral trade between states and County-level data. There is currently no timeline for these products, but they are in the works and will be announced as they become available. My goal is to have bilateral trade data available in November.
  • WiNDC Blog I am starting a weekly blog, the first post will be published on Friday, July 11. Topics will include MPSGE, data products, WiNDC, modeling examples, and more. The blog will be a platform for sharing insights, updates, and discussions related to our work and the broader economic modeling community.

Funding

WiNDC relies on funding from its consortium members to support its operations and development. We are actively seeking new members to join our consortium and contribute to the growth of WiNDC. If your organization uses WiNDC data and would like to become a member, please reach out to me directly. Without additional funding, WiNDC will shut down within the next 12 months.

Thank you for your continued support and engagement with WiNDC. I look forward to working with all of you to make WiNDC a valuable resource for economic modeling and policy analysis.
