This week I'll motivate the usefulness of creating a Julia package, demonstrate a simple process, and discuss best practices for Julia development.

Exploring Bilateral Trade using a Gravity Model

Mitch Phillipson
October 21, 2025
What is the total value of soybeans grown in Nebraska that is sold to China? This question is not directly answerable using data provided by the US Census. However, this number is going to be an import metric as global trade gets disrupted by tariffs. I am currently working on estimating this using a gravity model with iceberg trade. Today I will discuss issues with the current data and go through the gravity model developed for the USDA computing trade multipliers. This is the model I will be adapting to build bilateral trade flows between states into the WiNDC data.

Being able to easily share your results is incredibly important. Today I am going to talk about dashboards, in particular Genie.jl a framework to create dynamic dashboards. I am working on a dashboard for the WiNDC National Data. I'll show off the code, give insights on how to assemble dashboards and solicit ideas for other information to show off.
